Father’s Day Freebies at the Speedway

The crowd was blown away last night at the El Paso Speedway Park, and we aren’t talking about the wind. There were giveaways in celebration of Father’s Day while the ASCS Winged Sprint Cars took flight along with the USRA Street Stocks, USRA Limited X-Mods and Hornets.

As the first green flag waived in the USRA Street Stocks main event, John McDaniel took the lead with Justin Lasiter close on his tail. Lasiter took the win in the heat but he was unable to catch McDaniel in the main. After a caution with six laps to go, McDaniel left Lasiter in the dust and walked away with the trophy.

Next the Hornets buzzed onto the track with Benny Pena and Andre Gonzales neck and neck, but not for long. Pena revved up and took a hefty lead early in the race, leaving the real battle for second place. Tom Froats, who came into the night leading in points, ends up with second place while Pena cruised into the winner’s circle.

The USRA Limited X-Mods were stop and go at the start, with Alex Gonzalez leading the pack. It may have been the full moon or because it was Friday the 13th, but drivers were seeing red. With 20 laps to go, Paul Johnson spun out and John Careny Sr., with nowhere to go, slammed into Johnson bringing the race to a standstill. Another red thrown with 12 laps to go as Frank Padia flipped upside down in turn one. Once they got going it looked like Gonzalez was going to take home his first win at his home track until an upset in the final lap, Mingo Jaurejui passed Gonzalez just in time to pass the checker flag first.

In the last event of the night the ASCS Winged Sprint Cars, Kyle “Full Attention” Sager flew into the lead. Sager was this week’s Spotlight driver and set out tonight to have fun and put on a good show. He did just that, holding off Rick Ziehl for Sager’s first win in the El Paso Speedway Park 2014 season.

Next week come witness something you don’t see every day as drivers rip off their wings for the Non-Wing 360 “Wingless Warriors” race. Hitting the track as well are the Southwest Late Models, USRA Modifieds, USRA Street Stocks, Casa Nissan Legends Cars and Mini Sprints. You can get a family pack for two adults and four kids under the age of 16 for only $30. See you next week for a night out at the races.
